Founded in 1948 by Mr. Shoukri Salama as Salama Trading, the company focused on the trading of local grain along with importing and trading spices from the Sudan and Yemen. Mr. Salama conducted business through his legacy of: “quality goods at minimal cost in the least time”.
The company’s operations halted in 1959 as a result of the historical events occurring in Egypt at the time. It was not until 1977 when Salama Trading began operating again. In 1977, Mr. Sarwat Salama and Mr. Medhat Salama joined their father in the business, expanding its activity into the construction contracting sector and changing the company’s name to Shotmed (شوتمد). The contracting business was mainly to accommodate the trading business’ needs and focused on the construction of medium grain silos for land owners to safely store their grain. Mr. Shoukri Salama believed that adding value to his supplier’s and client’s products would yield profitability for all.
Over time, the Shotmed name became synonymous with Mr. Shoukri Salama’s business legacy. The contracting business boomed and the demand for grain silos along with quality steel structures and industrial steel equipment grew. In 1983, Shotmed acquired a steel fabrication workshop in the El Sahel district of the Cairo governorate to accommodate this high demand, establishing the steel fabrication division to complement the original construction contracting business. This workshop was relocated in 1985 to a larger property in the Tibetan district south of Cairo.
By the early nineties the Egyptian economy was flourishing and the demand for steel fabricators was on the rise. In 1995 to keep up with demand, Shotmed increased the size of its workshop and invested in a large plot for future growth.
As the Egyptian economy prospered Shotmed expanded with it, focusing on erection equipment, Shotmed increased its fleet of cranes and trucks to keep up with the high demand. By 2008 Shotmed had begun serving multiple new industries including sugar, cement, pulp and paper, chemicals and fertilizers, and transportation.
Three generations later Shotmed's scope of work now covers a wide range of services, industries, and product lines while remaining a fully privately owned business operating to ensure Mr. Shoukri Salama's legacy does not change.
